Seven Futures of American Education:  Improving Teaching and Learning in a Screen Captured World
February 1, 2013  2:00-3:00 pm ET - free to all.  Register in advance

Steve Gilbert interviews John Sener who offers the perspectives of author and parent; of observation, theory, and immersion.  Sener is the author of this thoughtful book about the influence of technology on the future of higher education AND  the parent of a son who is now half-way through his freshman year of college.
Excerpts from book description:
"... digital technologies....are...redefining knowledge, redistributing access, and renegotiating authority -- while education's growing importance is changing expectations about its performance. This combination offers a spectacular opportunity to improve education....by various scenarios -- Free Market Rules, Free Learning Rules, Standards Rule, Cyberdystopia, Steady As She Goes -- whose influences would be disastrous in the extreme but can be beneficial in moderation. ...Online learning ...can also lead the way ...Strategies for re-empowering learning and teaching, such as learning-centered engagement, learner-generated content, and sensible assessment can enhance the value of the interpersonal interactions which are at the heart of learning and teaching."

Learning JING using the Designated Learner Approach

This link will take you to a summary from the TLT 1/23/13 Member Exchange.  In the post, and below is a photo I enhanced using JING.  This was one thing I did to reinforce the lessons Irene Knokh shared during the session. I hope you will respond to this post and share some of the next steps you have been taking so we can continue to learn together.

Speaking of learning together, our next Member Exchange is February 6th, 2:00pm ET.  Penny Kuckkahn will teach us about Voice Thread. This link will take you to the registration page. On March 6th Irene will be back to teach us more about JING.

Looking forward to hearing from you.   Beth

Revamp the Sacred Credit-Hour? Caveat - Need to Clothe the Emperor?

"Carnegie [Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching], the Founder of the Credit-Hour, Seeks Its Makeover" - The Chronicle of Higher Education December 5, 2012 By Dan Berrett Excerpts:

"The credit hour... creator is asking whether it deserves to remain on its throne.
...Instituted..in 1906, the unit is traditionally defined as one hour of faculty-student contact per week and two hours of outside work over a 15-week semester. Though it was initially invented chiefly to determine faculty members' eligibility to receive a pension, the credit hour has assumed an importance it was never meant to have....A likely alternative is to base a standardized unit on some measure of competency instead of time spent in class, as has been popularized by such institutions as Western Governors University. But ...no single, competency-based metric is likely to replace time as the standard unit of measure.
... Other forces drove Carnegie's decision to reconsider the credit hour, ..including technology, which allows students to learn at their own pace; improved measurement methods; and new insights into how students learn. "

Dealing with Disruptive Students Online:  Setting the Tone
January 25, 2013  2:00-3:00 pm ET - free to all.  Register in advance
Presenters: Michael Dabney, Mary Chin, Steve Gilbert and others

We all know that in face to face classrooms, disruptive students can be difficult and that there are skillful ways to manage them.  Is the same thing true in online classrooms?  Do the same techniques work online as in face to face?  Can our experience and wisdom translate?

This session will be a Forum - a guided shared/mutual exploration of Disruptive Student Behavior in online courses - sharing examples from our own experience, making them up, raising questions together.

We already have one major recommendation:  It's important to clarify students' expected specific civil behaviors of fellow students and of teacher via discussion [synch or asynch]  - including instructor's own strong restrictions, include (emphasize) positive behaviors similar to "giving [almost] 100%"
